OVERCOMING DEPRESSION

Most individuals define depression as experiencing intense sadness. Although this may be true sadness is just an example of depression symptoms. Ideally, depression is a disorder that affects the mental health of an individual. It is emanated by various variants such as lack of pleasure and interest in life, poor sleeping patterns, appetite and concentration levels, having low energy and feeling guilty. These variants may become recurrent or chronic. In addition, depression impairs the capability of individuals to engage in their normal work related routines, hobbies or other social events. To its worst, depression triggers immense emptiness making individuals to commit suicide.

In fact, it has been reported that about 850,000 individuals suffering from depression end their life via suicide on a yearly basis. Depression is also among the disabilities in the world that cause grave burden this is because more than 121 million individuals in the world are depressed. America records about 15 million cases of individuals suffering from this predicament. Depression has been ranked as the 4th disease that leads to development of a plethora of illnesses. However, it can be reliably treated and prevented by use of primary care. Unfortunately, only about 25% of individuals suffering from depression seek medical attention to get effective treatment.

Medical experts that define depression differentiate it from sadness using its intensity, duration and frequency. The sadness experienced by depressed individuals is beyond normal range of feelings as it is emanated in deeper levels. Normal sadness comes and goes on the other hand depressed individuals experience prolonged episodes of sadness. Moreover, depressed individuals suffer from recurrent sadness which seems to follow a repetitive pattern. The sadness seems to have formed a permanent dark shadow in depressed individuals.

In order to overcome this phenomenon individuals need to correctly define depression. They should ensure they clearly understand its causes. This will help them to perfectly deduce the kind of treatment they require for instance some individuals cure their depression through medication, therapy treatment or use of mood enhancers. This is because each individual suffers from depression in a unique manner that is totally different from others. Therefore, treatment for one individual may not be effective when administered to another individual.

Depression results from the combination of an array of variants including social, psychological and biological factors. This may include loneliness, relationships, lifestyle choices, financial constraints, drug and alcohol abuse, genetics, childhood abuse and health problems.

Furthermore, to enable children understand the mental illness affecting their parents it is important to appropriately learn how to define depression. This is because children are intuitive and sensitive thus become worried and confused when they see their parents undergo through the inevitable behavioral changes. If this is unexplained they end up drawing their own conclusions and most of the times perceive themselves as the cause of the change in the moods and behavior of their loved ones. Therefore, it is important to explain to the children why their parents are behaving in such a manner and assure them that they are not the cause for their illness. Also walk through the treatment phase with the children allowing them to play a key role in supporting their loved ones as they heal.

All this being said, let me please add that depression is not an incurable disease. Follow your care givers orders, be patient and do all you can to help yourself and you can get back to a normal life.
